The Importance of the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a unique and fragile ecosystem widely known for biodiversity and evolutionary research. The islands' isolation and harsh environment have led to the evolution of distinct species found nowhere else in the world. Furthermore, the Galapagos Islands have played a crucial role in developing modern evolutionary theory, and they continue to be an important site for scientific research. The collaboration of science and ecotourism requires managed conservation efforts to ensure the islands and their biodiverse ecology remain a refuge for unique animal and plant species for generations to come.

Hydroil Selected as Official Supplier of BOSS Oily Water Separators in Galapagos Region

An interesting and effective method of conserving and preserving precious sea water is through Ecuadorian laws that require oily water separators to be installed on certain vessels, including those operating in the waters around the Galapagos Islands. Specifically, the Organic Environmental Code (Article 305) and the Galapagos Marine Reserve regulations (Article 43) require vessels over a specific size and operating in certain areas to have oily water separators installed and to follow particular discharge requirements for oily bilge water.

Because of the unique nature of the Galapagos Islands, these regulations have been put in place to prevent pollution from ships in and around the surrounding waters. The goal is to protect the marine environment from the harmful effects of oil and other pollutants.

H2O's channel partner, Hydroil, has been selected as the official supplier of BOSS Oily Water Separators (OWS) to the vessels working around the Galapagos Islands, supporting government policies in the care and preservation of this critical area. Hydroil will be working with various vessels to install OWS equipment with current and modern standards, in which BOSS will play a vital role. The OWS-BOSS system is now up and running, and we are confident that it will play a crucial role in protecting the delicate ecosystem of the islands.

Conserving the Galapagos is Vital

The Galapagos Islands are a unique and fragile ecosystem widely known for their incredible biodiversity and important role in the study of evolution. Conserving the Galapagos Islands is vital for several reasons:

Biodiversity

The Galapagos Islands are home to many unique and rare species, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and several types of finches. The islands' isolation and harsh environment have led to the evolution of distinct species found nowhere else in the world. Protecting these species and their habitats is crucial for maintaining biodiversity.

Ecotourism

The Galapagos Islands are a popular tourist destination, and ecotourism is a significant source of income for the local economy. Visitors from around the globe come to see the unique wildlife and landscapes of this pristine ecosystem. Managed conservation efforts are essential to ensure that visitors can continue to experience this unique habitat without harming the environment.

Scientific Research

The Galapagos Islands have played a crucial role in developing modern evolutionary theory, and they continue to be an important site for scientific research. Protecting the islands' ecosystems and species is essential for ongoing scientific study and discovery.

Climate Change

The Galapagos Islands are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and conservation efforts can help to mitigate these impacts and ensure that the islands remain a refuge for unique species in a changing world.

Conservation of the Galapagos Islands is essential for protecting biodiversity, supporting sustainable ecotourism, enabling scientific research, and mitigating climate change impacts. H2O Inc. and its channel partner Hydroil are proud participants in preserving this delicate ecosystem in the years to come.
