MiniBOSS Bilge Water Systems: The Eco-Friendly Solution for the World's Most Environmentally-Protected Waters

The world's most luxurious cruise ships are now operating in some of the most environmentally sensitive waters around the globe. It is more important than ever that no trace of oily water is discharged overboard, which can cause significant harm to marine life and the environment. That's why the MiniBOSS bilge water systems are becoming increasingly popular on vessels operating in earth's most protected waters.

One such vessel that has embraced the use of the MiniBOSS system is the ultra-luxurious cruise ship Silver Origin. Recently completed by Shipyard De Hoop, the ship is now part of the Silversea Cruises fleet, providing exclusive 100-guest cruises in the Galapagos Islands. Silver Origin was designed and built to exceptionally high environmentally friendly credentials, creating minimal impact on the Galapagos Archipelago.

The 100-passenger vessel has been fitted with two MiniBOSS systems, supplied by channel partner Wave International, to ensure the vessel will never discharge any dirty water overboard. The Galapagos area has been designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) under the most stringent protection by MARPOL, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution at Sea. This means no more than five ppm (parts per million) of oil in water discharge is allowed. This limit is usually 15 ppm in all other areas, and infringement of these limits can result in significant fines.

Thanks to a pre-filter and two XP420 cartridges, the MiniBOSS system ensures that no traces of oil or other pollutants, such as microplastics, are discharged overboard.

The MiniBOSS is designed to be mounted on a bulkhead, enabling easy access and taking up no deck space. It comes in three models: 24v DC with a maximum flow rate of 0.25 M³/hr and 110v and 240v AC with flow rates of 0.35 M³/hr. The filter technology provided by Wave International and encased within the MiniBOSS , removes all trace pollutants that remain trapped within the filter cartridge. The system's control panel indicates when the filters require replacing.

Paul Gullett, managing director of Wave International, says, "We're delighted that the MiniBOSS system was specified for this build, and all its benefits in terms of its compact size, weight, and reliability were recognized. Due to the extremely sensitive environment in which Silver Origin operates, it is essential that there is always complete confidence that this ship will meet and even exceed the stringent discharge regulations at all times."
